Admission Standards
- Children under 10 years who are non-swimmers MUST be accompanied by an individual who is 14 years or older and responsible for their direct supervision. Maximum ratio 2:1.
- Children who are 8 & 9 years that are strong swimmers may take the facility swim test to determine if they can enter the pool by themselves. (If children 8 & 9 do not pass the swim test they need to be within arms reach of an adult in the water.)
- Children 7 years & under MUST be accompanied by an individual 14 years or older. (Public Pools Regulation, Under the Health Protection and Promotion Act Reg. 565 s.17.21 and Lifesaving Society's Guide to Ontario Public Pools Regulations, Section 17. updated July 2018)

Code of Behaviour
The Town of Hanover endeavours to provide the highest level of safety and enjoyment to all participants and staff members for the duration of its programs. The guidelines have been developed to ensure that all involved are aware of acceptable behaviour. Coarse language, physical and aggressive behaviour, inappropriate or uncooperative behaviour will be recorded, reported and may result in removal from the program and/or facility.
The Town offers lessons based on the Lifesaving Society’s Swim for Life curriculum. Our comprehensive lessons, available from Preschool to Advanced levels, are accessible, flexible, success-oriented and fun! Group, adult, private and semi-private lessons are available.

Bronze Medallion | Emergency First Aid | CPR-B
This course develops physical fitness, decision making and judgment skills for water rescue. Emergency First Aid knowledge skills are also covered.
Prerequisite: 13 years of age (prior to exam) or Bronze Star award. 100% Attendance is mandatory.
Bronze Cross | CPR-C | Standard First Aid
This course teaches the difference between lifesaving and assistant lifeguarding, the principles of emergency procedures, teamwork and the use of special equipment. Spinal injury management techniques, safety supervision scanning and rescue situations are also covered.
Prerequisite: Bronze Medallion | Emergency First Aid | CPR-B. 100% Attendance is mandatory.
Assistant Swim Instructor
Through classroom learning and in-water practice, the Assistant Instructor course prepares candidates to help instructors with swimming and lifesaving skills. Candidates are introduced to key principles of learning and teaching while they master basic progressions. The roles and responsibilities of instructors and their assistants including the principles of healthy child development are emphasized. Candidates must complete 18 apprenticeship hours during the course.
Prerequisite: 14 years of age, Bronze Cross.100% Attendance is mandatory.
National Lifeguard (NL)
This intensive 40-hour course will train candidates in advanced water rescue, emergency care and aquatic supervision. Emphasis will be on accident prevention, leadership, teamwork and communication. NL is the standard lifeguarding certification across Canada.
Prerequisite: Bronze Cross (need not be current), 15 years of age by the end of the course. Must hold a valid Standard First Aid with CPR-C certificate from an approved agency to register in the course. 100% attendance is mandatory to complete the course.
Swim Instructor
This course prepares you to teach and evaluate the swimming strokes and related skills found in the Lifesaving Society Swim For Life Program. Successful candidates will receive Swim for Life Instructor certification. Candidates will acquire proven teaching methods, planning skills, lifesaving skills and a variety of stroke development drills and correction techniques. Candidate materials required for the course are included in the cost.
Prerequisite: Bronze Cross, Assistant Swim Instructor & 15 years of age by the end of the course. 100% Attendance is mandatory.
Lifesaving Swim Instructor
The Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructor course prepares individuals to organize, plan, teach and evaluate lifesaving and first aid skills, resuscitation techniques in the Society’s lifesaving and first aid awards, including Canadian Swim Patrol and Bronze programs. Successful candidates receive two certification cards: Lifesaving Instructor and Emergency First Aid Instructor. Recommended course for experienced instructors who have taught a session(s) of swim lessons.
Prerequisite: Bronze Cross, Assistant Instructor & 16 years of age by the end of the course. 100% Attendance is mandatory.
Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid Recertification
Recertification candidates must hold an original Lifesaving Society First Aid to be able to recertify.
National Lifeguard Recertification
Lifeguards are legally required to re-certify their qualifications every two years. This clinic will update lifeguards on the latest developments in training techniques and statistical research.
Are changerooms available?
Yes. Our facility offers separate male, female and family changerooms to ensure everyone’s comfort and privacy. Changerooms are equipped with washroom facilities, pay to use lockers for your belongings and shower facilities. The door to the pool deck will remain locked until the start of the program.
How much are lockers?
Lockers are available. .25 cents for small locker and .50 cents for full size locker.
Is the sauna available?
Sauna will be available during Public swim, Adult/Senior swim and Lane swim.
Can I take pictures on deck or in the viewing room?
The use of any device that is capable of rendering a photographic image is prohibited in the showers, changerooms, washrooms, observation area and pool area (includes go pros)
Do I need to shower before my pool program?
Yes. Patrons must shower prior to entering the pool. Please have a thorough shower with soap and warm water before entering or re-entering the pool deck. Beauty products, body oils and bacteria are damaging to our water and air quality. For your health and others, please do your part and shower.
Can I bring a drink or food on deck?
No food on deck. Only water is permitted in a plastic reusable container.
Will the viewing room be available to view my child?
Yes. The pool viewing room is located on the 2nd level of the P & H Centre off of the walking track. To access the pool viewing room, go to the 2nd floor and follow the signs to the pool viewing area on the east side of the building adjacent to the walking track.
Should I join a waitlist of the lesson/program is full?
Yes. If you are trying to register for a class that is currently full, please join the waitlist for the level closest to the day and time you prefer. Waitlists assist staff when evaluating demand for future planning. Waitlists are addressed one to two weeks prior to the start of the session and monitored during the first week for last minute cancellations. Staff will contact waitlisted participants if a spot becomes available, or if it is possible, to create an additional class.
What is the cancellation policy for lessons/programs?
A refund or credit will be granted and calculated as follows:
- Program cancellation by Department - full registration fee.
- Participant(s) cancels 7 days or more prior to program start date - registration fee less $20.00 administration fee.
- Last minute cancellations (less than 7 days prior to program start date) - registration fee less $20.00 will be granted as a credit on account (Note: Program status is decided 7 days prior to program start date. Your withdrawal may put the class below its minimum number to operate).
Prior to or during the program due to:
- Medical Reasons - value of remaining classes less applicable administration fee, provided no more than 75% of session has passed.
- Program Dissatisfaction - value of remaining classes less applicable administration fee, provided no more than 50% of the session has passed.
